The birthplace of America is considered to be Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is because the city was the site of many important events in the early history of the United States including the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution.
The signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 is the foundational document that symbolizes the birth of the United States as an independent nation. The Declaration of Independence is 29 pages long. It has 1,320 words, or 1,337 words if you include the title. If you add the names of all the signers, the Declaration of Independence contains 1,458 words.
The U.S. National Park Services recognizes Independence Hall in Philadelphia as the birthplace of America. NASA Earth Observatory states Philadelphia is the birthplace of the United States. The U.S. Army describes Philadelphia's Independence Hall as America’s birthplace. The Pew Charitable Trusts acknowledges Philadelphia as the birthplace of America.
In 1776, the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence in Carpenter’s Hall (now know as Independence Hall) not far from the red-brick building that then housed Pennsylvania’s colonial government. Construction of Independence Hall started in 1732.
The Pennsylvania legislature loaned their Assembly Room out for the meetings of the Second Continental Congress and later, the Constitutional Convention. Here, George Washington was appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in 1775, the Articles of Confederation officially took effect in 1781, and Benjamin Franklin gazed upon the "Rising Sun" chair in 1787.
Philadelphia became the central meeting place for the men who created the United States government. The buildings where the founders worked still stand in an area called the Old City The National Park Service protects much of Philadelphia’s Old City.
Independence Hall is now part of Independence National Historical Park, which also includes other significant sites such as Congress Hall and the Liberty Bell Center. The park is visited by millions of tourists each year and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
