The American Oil & Gas Historical Society (AOGHS)acknowledges it as the first automobile regularly made for sale in the United States.


    In 1893, Charles and Frank Duryea built the first gasoline-powered vehicle in the United States. This vehicle, known as the Duryea Motor Wagon, had a single-cylinder engine and could reach a top speed of around 10 miles per hour.


    In 1896, the Duryea brothers formed the Duryea Motor Wagon Company in Springfield, Massachusetts, to produce their vehicles for sale to the public. The Duryea Motor Wagon Company is considered one of the first American companies to produce automobiles in significant quantities for commercial sale.
