The first ever basketball game was played on December 21, 1891 at the School for Christian Workers (later the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Springfield College describes the game as the first organized game of basketball. The Basketball Hall of Fame recognizes it as the first game of basketball. McGill University defines it as the first formal game of basketball. The World Record Academy acknowledges it as the world's first basketball game.
Dr. Luther Gulick, head of physical education at the School for Christian Workers asked Dr. James Naismith to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter.
Naismith's invention didn't come easily. In an attempt to increase participation in his gym class, which consisted of older gentlemen training to become executive secretaries, 30 year old James Naismith invented a game he called “basket ball” (then two words).
Dr. James Naismith was a Canadian physical education instructor. This first basketball game was played in The School for Christian Workers gymnasium with a soccer ball and two peach baskets serving as goals.
The objective of the game was to throw the soccer ball into the opposing team's peach basket to score points. The rules of the game were relatively simple compared to modern basketball, with nine players on each team. The final score of that first game was reportedly 1-0, and the only point was scored by a player named William R. Chase.
The School for Christian Workers building was built on what is now the corner of State and Sherman streets in Springfield, Massachusetts. The building has been known by many different names over the years including the Winchester Square Building, the Mason Square building and the Armory Hill building.
The original building was torn down in 1965 to create a parking lot. In 1995, McDonald’s Corporation bought the land, excavating the original foundation and bricks before building a restaurant on the site. Today, there is a monument commemorating the site as the birthplace of basketball.

Basketball quickly gained popularity and spread to other YMCA centers and schools. Over time, the rules were refined, including the introduction of the dribble and the elimination of the soccer-style throw-ins from the sideline. The game's popularity continued to grow, and it eventually became one of the most widely played and watched sports in the world.
Today, basketball is played at various levels, from recreational leagues to professional leagues like the NBA (National Basketball Association), and it is an integral part of sports culture globally. The first game in 1891 marked the beginning of this incredible journey for the sport of basketball.
